@Mitchh231 I was a USFS firefighter on the Mendocino National Forest. We were supplied with canvas knapsacks. They were durable that that's about all. Do you know if you will be wearing your pack on the lines or will they sit in fire camp? For my Search & Rescue 24 hour pack, I use an Osprey Aura which won't help you out but I'm completely taken by the AntiGravity suspension. I'm not sure about the durability but they have a very good guarantee. Good luck on your Firefighting career and be safe out there.

Hello fellow outdoorspeople! My name is Margaret and I've been a member since 1997. I've been an REI customer since the 80's. I grew up on a remote ranch in Northern California and was a horseman, hiker, hunter, and apparent social isolater since the dawn of time. I put myself through college working for the US Forest Service as a firefighter, Helitack crew member and then fire prevention technician. I had the great fortune to start my career as a graphic designer in beautiful Lake Tahoe where I took up cross country and downhill skiing. I moved to Las Vegas Nevada in 1985 and became a desert rat. Took up rock climbing (we have some of the best the world by the way) and scuba diving. I've participated in volunteer outdoor service projects through the USFS PIT program and the Sierra Club, where we spent a week, amongst the wildfires at beautiful Glacier National Parks in in 2015. For the the past six years I have served my community on the field team at all-volunteer, Red Rock Search and Rescue. The outdoors and REI and an inseparable part of my life.
