REI should lead by example here, starting by reducing the excessive packaging used for ship-to-store purchases. When I bought a folded paper map, it came in a cardboard box the size of a shoebox, with a big piece of packing paper stuffed inside to prevent the map from bouncing around in the big empty box. A pair of sandals arrived in a plastic bag big enough to hold three or four shoe boxes. Please clean up your own house before telling your customers to clean up theirs!
@d7, thank you for this candid feedback; we really appreciate hearing these specific examples so we can continue to improve our shipping practices. Please know that we are working with our distribution centers to ensure we have a better range of packages they can choose from to pack orders like yours – just one flat item. We’ve tried to be efficient in our shipping by having a limited range of box sizes and recyclable plastic shipping bags (which actually have a lower impact than an equivalent box, and are recyclable in most drop-off locations), but are recognizing we need a better solution for these types of orders.
Thank you for caring about this issue and please know that we are dedicated to improving sustainability across the outdoor industry, including in our own practices; you can learn more in our Stewardship Report.
